Good but not great; technical issues
First it must be said (because I’m not seeing it in the other reviews) — the input lag is considerable. I’m not sure whether that is because it’s ported from Windows, or what. I experience the same lag using the trackpad also, so it’s not a driver issue with the mouse. I do not experience this with other games, just Deus Ex. I tried using raw input (an option under Advanced Settings in the game launcher) — that made the mouse unusable in the game. So I have to mention this first, because many things in the game depend on how quickly you can react and respond — and the lag gets in the way of that.
But I adapted somewhat to the mouse lag, and found it a decent game. I think that cyberpunk genre has a lot to be explored, and I’m glad people are attempting games in this space. The story was good enough, it was obviously crafted to the gameplay but it has enough hooks to keep the interest up. The scenes are richly detailed and fun to explore (if labyrinthine) … The difficulty tuning needs some work. The first boss is in my opinion harder than it ought to be, especially considering I was low on ammo, but I did have rockets. I couldn’t take the guy down with two rockets, which is implausible. Almost made me quit altogether. But after replaying it a million times I got through it and kept on. It was not a feeling of triumph — more like “wtf, seriously?"
The stealth mechanics were good but short of great. Give me a button to throw a whistle (e.g. Assassin’s Creed) instead of having to pick up a box and throw it to get an enemy’s attention. Stuff like that made the game feel like it came up short, but it has more going for it than against it.
