Game Engine lacks Power
While the Game has a great scenario and several path and alternative story lines, I found playing DEHR less thrilling than the original Deus Ex. This is due to mostly three things:
- The game engine is not as efficient as Unreal, it produces beautiful images but is unplayable when you crank the visual quality up. I own a MacBook Pro Core duo at 2.53 Ghz with 8 Gig ram and a SSD also the video card is a respectable NVidia GE Force 9600 GT with 512 meg ram. But even with my setup I had to lower the quality a lot and even then it feels sluggish. Compared to games using the the Unreal engine, the Crystal Dynamics engine used by DEHR is very inferior and outdated.
- The original game was dark you could hide in the shadows and that was the trademark of the original game; it was moody and atmospheric. In contrast, DEHR is very bright, even when lowering the brightness, everything remains quite high and even; the feeling is quite bland.
- The game is slow to evolve and convoluted; the action is sparse and I felt there was too many cut scenes where you have to wait instead of interacting.
