Meh...
Well I know alot of people like this game but I just couldn’t get into it. Don’t misunderstand me I played through the whole game, I need to get my money’s worth after all. However, many of the strong points that people state in their reviews I just simply can’t agree with. Frankly, if I had not payed for the game I probably would have stopped after the first three or four missions.
The game ran very well on my late 2012, 13” macbook pro. In spite of the error message warning about graphics errors I received prior to booting every time I experienced no problems whatsoever. The graphic quality is fine although its mostly the standard dystopian future garbage you see in half of the Triple A games getting released these days. The character designs would have been okay if they didn’t seem so heavily and generically inspired by the Metal Gear Solid games (since Sons of Liberty, and mind you that game predates this one by nearly a decade). I found myself bored by pretty much all of the Boss fights in the game, and I played on the highest difficulty setting. The boss fights themselves are indicative of pretty much the overall game experience. Basically the gameplay amounts to your standard duck and cover stealthy-ish shooter. As long as you focus on the right character and gun upgrades you can pretty much breeze through the game. Additionally the augmentation upgrades in this game felt uninspired. Now I was a big fan of the original Deus Ex and I understand in the timeline this story is a prequel, however in that the augmentations all made sense in this some of the augmentations are quite literally useless. In order to consistently get experience and upgrade you will find yourself trodding through the mind-numbing tedium of ‘hacking’ computer terminals and door locks.
Lastly there is the story... Many people seemed to praise this game based on the story. However, if I compare to the original Deus Ex this game simply does not hold up. I found the story to be relatively flat and predictable, especially if you had played the previous game. All of the deep conspiracy oriented story-telling that was so appealing about the first game seems like it has just been shoe-horned into this one. Furthermore the ending just came across as heavy-handed and pretentious, an attempt to comment on real world issues but coming across as completely out of touch. Perhaps I read too much into it but its hard not to take it that way when the final video prior to the credits features live footage of people protesting, companies polluting the environment and boots marching while the main character monologues about the virtues and follies of mankind.
Final conclusion, if you enjoy duck and scoot shooters and have ran through the other options in the app store this game is okay. I realize much of my criticism is based on personal taste. There are many people who thoroughly enjoy this game and for the price of addmision I suppose it can be a solid play through. But for me the combination of monotonous gameplay, heavy-handed story telling and generic dystopian settings simply did not satisfy what I was looking for.
